I'm Markus Houston, founder of the Relocating Help Outreach Foundation. Prior to my homeless journey I was a successful Real Estate Investor & Loan Officer earning six figures a year. Then the Real Estate Industry collapsed and left me & my family completely devasted, we lost everything. As a result of this change in lifestyle I lost my family and those who I thought were my closes loved ones & friends. Not knowing how to navigate through such a tragedy & trauma, I became severely depressed & eventually homeless. In the process of going through homelessness, I suffered the losses of my father, then my mother and then my grandmother all within a couple of months back-to-back. I’ve never been homeless & hopeless before, and I didn't really know any homeless or recovered homeless people personally to ask for guidance. There I was alone in the wilderness night and day, clueless on where to turn. I was always told by the local media Houston Texas has so many resources for the homeless and they just choose not to use them, boy was I arrogant. I quickly found out, not only was I arrogant I was naive to think that I actually understood what others who walk this walk of homelessness situations & circumstances were like. I used to ride around in my Lexus and at the light I would glance around and see homeless people all over, of course being careful not to make eye contact, thinking to myself how did this person get here and why don't they just go to work.
Let me tell you, I would never ask that question again because God has a funny way in showing you how they got there. Fast forward I'm alone and I'm afraid not sure where to start my journey out of homelessness. The things I use to take for granted… where to eat or where to shower and how I’m going to get there, simple decisions.
You would think temporary homeless shelters would be the best option, but I quickly found out it's a gift and a curse. Yes, it's a roof over your head and they provide food to eat & a shower if you dare to get in it, but there's a certain element that’s not of God present. Believe it or not there's an element of our society that preys on the homeless and the weak. Looking to involve them in all types of unproductive behavior, such as drugs, alcohol, fraud, sexual abuse, human trafficking, beneficiary scammers looking for those that are about to die, Etc. There's also a negative atmosphere that's not conducive for the soul. Temporary homeless shelters consist of people that have accepted failure as a way of life and looking for those they can bring down with them…(The Old Adage Misery Loves Company).
Yes it's true, everything is not always as sweet & easy as the media make it seem or others who have never been through it repeat. I was Green to homelessness, like most of us who have never been homeless. I unfortunately had the opportunity to experience standing in line for free food in the morning and then traveling without a car another 20 miles for free food in the afternoon. And if you're lucky you may get dinner which has another long line (The Infamous Walk of Shame) in the evening.
Let me ask you if you don't have a car and you’re catching the bus, that’s if the bus driver is kind enough to allow you to board the bus because of lack of funds, when do you have time to get your Birth Certificate, ID/Driver License & Social Card Back? After having it stolen by some other Homeless person because you had the nerve to fall asleep duct off under the bridge, sidewalk, behind the industry garbage dumpster or some other place you thought were secluded and safe. Mind you… these things are needed for employment and maybe more if you’re not like everyone else during the President Trump Era..If You Know What I Mean? In the process of traveling place to place with everything you own in a cheap plastic trash bag (Yes!!!! The Glad & Hefty Bag Cost to Much) or a Backpack if you’re lucky. With all your life valuables & when I say life valuables, I'm not talking about jewelry, credit cards or bank cards. I'm talking about the basic necessities; hygiene and a change of clothes. When do you have the time or the means to find employment? By the way you have no address or cell phone and not too many places or people willing to allow you to use their personal phone to make an outbound call, let alone wait on you to get an inbound call. The Homeless lifestyle has several challenges... I’ve only mentioned a few of them.
The reason Relocating Help Outreach Foundation was created is because I learned firsthand how to navigate successfully through and out of Homelessness. Now I have the knowledge & ability to speed up the process for those that are less fortunate and may not have the skill set or the ability to articulate and communicate the way I was blessed to do so. I'm asking those who read this testimony & experience to help & assist Relocating Help Outreach Foundation in our vision to Create & Build Faith Based Inspirational & Productive Transitional Housing for Men, Women and Children to provide a safe place to restructure their lives. Relocating Help Outreach Foundation will provide all the resources, education and opportunities needed for a successful recovery from homelessness. Our program will navigate those facing Homelessness through the homeless recovery process by engaging them with inspirational faith-based systems and practical ways of getting back on their feet. We will not only assist them in getting jobs and housing but also reuniting them with family members and friends that may have been lost because they gave up on them or they were to embarrassed & ashamed to ask for help because of their failures. We included on our site & in this letter several ways to contribute. Every contribution makes a difference no matter how big or small…
Thank You for Taking the Time to Read & Listen
